A new type of gaming
By James @ Worry+Peace
There hasn't been much to shout about in gaming outside of the Big-3 since, well, the 90s. So it's heartening that, like buses, challengers are entering the fray. Besides the hotly anticipated arrival of the Steam OS and its ecosystem of consoles, Nvidia are diving feet first in to the console space with The Shield.
Boasting an impressive 200 gaming titles at launch, a teraflop of computing power, support for the quite awesome 4K generation of television, and the ability to connect with all the trimmings of Android TV's apps and entertainment - Nvidia came to play.
“Today we are introducing NVIDIA’s first living room entertainment device,” Jen-Hsun Huang of Nvidia told a pumped-up crowd at launch event.
And the industry's legion of blogs and commentators are certainly talking about it. Alongside Shield, Nvidia are also deploying a supercomputer they call "The Grid". (No, it's not a John Twelve Hawks plotline). This is designed to handle the masses of traffic and ensure a fast, fluid experience.
Whether the Nvidia chews into the market share of the Big-3 consoles is anyone's guess, all we know is it's great to see some affordable diversity hitting the shelves - that can only be good for all the amazing indie game studios that keep us entertained when EA are thinking up the next number to add to John Madden, Tiger Woods or FIFA franchises.
